No matter what the new trend is, cupcakes will always be a staple in the pastry world. Maybe it's the fun twist of frosting or the sprinkles..... There's always so much fun to be had and little things you can do differently even if you're using a box recipe (most of us do).

One of my family's favourites is a black forest cupcake. Super easy and presentable for parties. Use the darkest chocolate cake mix possible, we normally use devil's food. That's the boring part- the fun part is the toppings. You'll need the typical Black Forest fixings- cherry pie filling, and vanilla frosting or cool whip.

Bake the cupcakes according to the box directions and allow them to cool to room temperature. Put the vanilla frosting or cool whip in a piping bag fitted with at least a half inch tip of a design you choose. Pipe a rim around each cupcake, then put the cupcakes in the fridge for at least 10 minutes. Spoon some cherry pie filling in the middle. That's it- super simple, but tasty and fun.

 

Another fun tidbit to try at home is to get some miniature reece's. Prep your cupcake pans and in the bottom put one mini reece's in each well. Then using that same devil's food or darker chocolate cake mix. Fill to the proper level and bake according to the package instructions. Frost the tops with alternating rings of chocolate and peanut butter frosting. Then you can decorate the top with either chopped up reece's or mini chocolate chips.

Just like cake pops, cupcakes allow you to be creative. Most people just don't venture to be creative and stick with the same old. Have some fun!! Get the kids involved!!
